2017 Teacher Training in Riga, Latvia

Our Teacher's Training course offers daily lectures and Q&A sessions based on class observations for better understanding of the method and philosophy behind Vaganova training. Lectures come from exceptionally qualified Vaganova instructors including those few remaining who were trained directly by Agrippina Vaganova herself and exclusive time with each of our illustrious summer intensive instructors. In the words of a past participant, "Your intensive is like having the feeling you are in the cradle of dance."

This summer we will again hold our teacher's training in Riga, Latvia where we debuted this one-of-a-kind opportunity in 2014. Riga, the capital of Latvia, is considered the pearl of the Baltics. With a heritage dating back 800 years, the architecture of Riga is beauteous and diverse. Each century has left its marks in the architecture in the Old Town and City Centre where the cultural heritage coexists with the quick pace of modern living. Among various reasons for choosing Riga as our location, it is the birthplace and childhood home of our mentor, friend and supporter - Mikhail Baryshnikov.

The Teacher Training Program will be held in conjunction with our Summer Intensive. We encourage you to consider whether any of your students should audition to participate. The Teacher Training program will cover teaching methodology for all eight levels. Please join our mailing list so you will be one of the first to receive updated information. This allows teachers to begin each day with lectures on the methodology and philosophy of Agrippina Vaganova followed by observation of classes and opportunities for questions and answers. We offer a unique opportunity to learn from the few who were trained directly by Agrippina Vaganova and are still teaching today. Professor Safronova is expected to lead the Teachers Training course. She was a student of Agrippina Vaganova, a principal at the Mikhailovsky Theatre, and a long time instructor and Professor at the Vaganova Academy.

All Summer Program Instructors will come from the group of teachers we have had the pleasure of working with in the past. These include Professor Safronova, Professor Trofimova, and Irina Kolpakova - all students of Agrippina Vaganova herself. Plus Elena Sherstneva, Vladilen Semenov, and Aleksandr Stepin who graduated from Vaganova Academy and are highly experienced dancers and teachers.  Cyril Atanasoff of the Paris Opera plans to join us again to be part of this unique program.

We asked one of our participants to describe how our program compares to other recognized international programs.

He said, "I've taken the ... courses that [another major program] provides in NY, during three consecutive summers. Really intensive, eight hours a day, eight days in a row with no week-end. And the last day is an examination. We had to create and demostrate a combination. After that a certificate saying we had taken courses with such pedagogues (that certificate doesn't allow anyone to use the name ...). Well, it's very interesting, but very different from what you did last year.

I loved them both, but your intensive is like having the feeling you are in the cradle of dance. We can observe the artistry, the philosophy. Having Kolpakova is a plus. And Saffronova... directly from Agrippina!! And Elena, And Semionov . . . [The other program] is strictly technical, very useful for learning to create combinations, but lacks the artistic insight you show. I was really happy to see you teach Paquita corps de ballet and telling all the traditional detalis that only Kirov ballerinas know. [The other program] dosen't show repertoire for teachers . . . Your program is more complete.”
